LIVERPOOL FC: Steven Gerrard is past it?

Football - Liverpool v Everton Barclays Premier League

STEVEN GERRARD is past it, he's had his day, he sulks, he's not the player he was - Liverpool should sell him.

Amazingly, these are comments from people claiming to be Liverpool fans. People, it seems, with very short memories.

The Reds skipper has bailed Liverpool out time and again, single-handedly leading the Reds to glory on countless occasions.

But that's all in the past, right?

The facts suggest otherwise. Media types are handed a statistical brochure before every Premier League match and the information distributed before Liverpool's match with Manchester City made for interesting reading:
  • Liverpool player with the most shots this season: Gerrard (63)
  • Liverpool player with the most shots on target this season: Gerrard (41)
  • Liverpool player with the most shots off target this season: Gerrard (22)
  • Liverpool player with the most assists this season: Gerrard (6)
  • Liverpool player with the most crosses this season: Gerrard (83)
Past it? Doesn't care? Don't think so.

For all my unlimited admiration of Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina, Javier Mascherano, Jamie Carragher, Glen Johnson, Dirk Kyut and others in the Liverpool team, Steven Gerrard remains our best player by a clear distance. Inspirational in his fighting spirit and leadership abilities, confident in his football and athletic skills, Stevie is the true Mr. Liverpool.

Stevie will be a force to reckon be for Liverpool for several more years - and, when he finally decides to hang his boots, I hope he joins the coaching staff as Liverpool work on recreating the famous bootroom of Bill Shankly. Within the next decade, I am looking forward to seeing Stevie and Jamie taking Liverpool forward in management/coaching roles - as Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish did so magnificently in the glorious seventies and eighties.

i agree Steven Gerrard is by far are bet player and so what even if he does sulk he has a right to i mean just his presence on the football pitch bring the moral of the whole team up while putting fear into the opposing team, and even when he is having a bad game he can change it in a second with one special moment!!!
While I agree, I still want to wake SG up in that he is the leader, captain and the rallying master. If he sulks and does not lead in the field, the liverpool game will continue at this level - way way below the top 4.
The people that call him rubbish aren't proper Kopites. He has been, is, and will be one of our best ever players. If it wasn't for him rallying the team on, I dread to think where we might have ended up. YNWA

He looks disinterested. If the ball doesn't fall to his feet, he rolls his eyes and stops running. If he loses poscession, as he is a lot this season, he doesn't track back anymore. He may well have the best stats this season, but lets face it - who else is he competing against. the whole team has been abysmal. A more worrying stat is; Goals in 08/09: 24
Goals in 09/10: 6 so far and unless we get a bunch of pennos, I doubt he'll get into double fugures.
Stevie's not past it - he's just not in good form, and hasn't been fsince pre-season.

I think Gerrard's 'problem' is wanting to be involved in everything thats going on on the pitch. It's not entirely a bad thing, but sometimes he needs to sit back and let others take the reins

Personally i think Gerrard has more influence on the game when he plays in midfield. Put Yossi behind Torres and put Gerrard next to Mascha as i really don't think we need two holding midfielders (especially at home)
Hes not past it...
But his form has dipped remarkably and its clear to see, because of the standards he sets. It could well be he injuries are catching up him, as hes not getting any younger, the affects last that much longer after a lay off.

The one i will say is that he does, as mentioned above is to try to do everything... His crossing from corners or free kicks have been woeful at times....
When he have had aurilio who is far better from those situations.. I'd much rather see him in the box challenging for the header, then watching skrtl hit one over again and again!

Im sure he will be back to his best soon!
I have been a Liverpool supporter since 1944 and a season ticket holder for many years: I admit that I have not seen some of the great players continuously over a long period of time, but I think I've seen enough of them to make the following observation-- Steven Gerard is the best footballer I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Consistently week in week out he produces the goods. The only thing I can say to any doubters is go out and watch and give the lad the credit he is due. Long may he reign. Make the most of his brilliance because you will probably will never see his like again and that is a fact.!!!
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Hopefully so are LFC's hangers-on.
..there are a lot more left in him. He will remain one of our greatest player, and will still improve.

He's just a little bit down in form, but has shown some improvement in recent games. His deliveries during the City game has been very good but to bad we do not have the players to finish it off.

I believe Gerrard will be pumped-up again now that Torres is back from injury.
Play him in the center of midfield ! Simple really.
He took his foot off the gas as soon as he realized we would not win the league. Also, he is the best midfielder in the world picking up scraps as a second striker, Rafa has lost the plot.
